Plaid Jacket Style No. 6006-Spinnerin Volume 150 (1961)

This pattern is based on vintage sizing guidelines, which may differ from modern sizing.  Please look at the Sizing Guide for Spinnerin Vol. 150 for information.


 These directions are for size 4.  Changes for sizes 6 and 8 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS

SPINNERIN Nylaine Germantown Knitting Worsted, 4-oz. skeins

Main Color-MC, 2 skeins
Color A, 1 skein
Color B, 1 skein
1 pair of needles No. 8
Steel crochet hook No.1
13 bobbins, 5 buttons
1 yard of 1-1/2 inch grosgrain ribbon

GAUGE: 5 sts=1 inch     7 rows=1 inch

NOTE 1: If necessary, change to larger or smaller needles to obtain the required stitch gauge.

NOTE 2: Wind 4 bobbins of MC, 3 bobbins of Color A, 6 bobbins of Color B.  to avoid holes when changing colors, always pick up new color from underneath the color just used.  Break off and rejoin bobbins when necessary.

PLAID PATTERN
Odd Rows, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17: K 8(10-12) MC, *2B, 4A, 2B, 10 MC; repeat from * once then end with 2B, 4A, 2B, 8(10-12) MC.
Even Rows, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16: P 8(10-12) MC, *2B, 4A, 2B, 10 MC; repeat from * once then end with 2B, 4A, 2B, 8(10-12) MC.
Row 18: With B Purl.  Row 19: With B knit.  Row 20: With B purl.
Rows 21, 23, 25: K 8(10-12) A, *2B, 4A, 2B, 10A: repeat from * once, then end with 2B, 4A, 2B, 8 (10-12) A.
Rows 22 and 24: P 8(10-12) A, *2B, 4A, 2B, 10A; repeat from * once, then end with 2B, 4A, 2B, 8(10-12) A.
Row 26: With B purl.  Row 27: With B knit.  Row 28: With B purl.  Repeat these 28 rows for plaid pattern.

BACK: With No. 8 needles cast on 60(64-68) sts as follows: 8(10-12) MC, *2B, 4A, 2B, 10 MC; repeat from * once then end with 2B, 4A, 2B, 8(10-12) MC.  Work in plaid pattern until back measures 10(11-12) inches from start--a 3/4 inch hem will be turned up later.  Armholes: Bind off 3(4-4) sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 4(4-6) rows.  Work on the 50(52-54) sts until armholes measure 5(5-1/2-6) inches straight up.  Shoulders: Bind off 8 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 8(9-9) sts at beg of next 2 rows; bind off remaining 18(18-20) sts.

NOTE: Make buttonholes for boy on left front, for girl on right front.  Make the front without buttonholes first.

RIGHT FRONT: Cast on 34(36-38) sts as follows; 8(10-12) MC, 2B, 4A, 2B, 10 MC, 2B, 4A, 2B.  Work in plaid pattern having 2 B-sts at front edge and working side edge same as back edge until front measures 10(11-12) inches.  Armhole: Bind off 3 (4-4) sts at side edge then bind off 1 st at same edge every other row 2(2-3) times; 29(30-31) sts.  Neck: Bind off 1 st at front edge every other row 13(13-14) times; work on the 16(17-17) sts until armhole measures same as for back.  Shoulder: Bind off 8 sts from armhole edge once then bind off last 8(9-9) sts.
With pins, mark position of 5 buttons placing the first about 2-1/2 inches from lower edge and the last 1/2 inch below start of neck.

LEFT FRONT: Cast on 34(36-38) sts as follows: 2B, 4A, 2B, 10 MC, 2B, 4A, 2B, 8(10-12) MC.  Work to correspond to right front making buttonholes opposite markers as follows: Starting at front edge, work 3 sts, bind off 2 sts, work to end of row.  Next row, cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts.

SLEEVES: With MC, cast on 34(34-36) sts; work in stockinette-st for 6 rows.  P next row to make a ridge for hemline.  Continue in stockinette-st inc 1 st at each side every 6th row 7(8-9) times; work on the 48(50-54) sts until sleeve measures 10-1/2(11-12) inches from ridge.  Cap: Bind off 3(3-4) sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 20(22-24) rows; 22 sts.  Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 6 rows then bind off remaining 10 sts.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams; set in sleeves.  Turn up 3/4 inch hem on sweater and sew; turn up and sew sleeve hem.  With matching colors work 2 rows of sc around neck edge; turn sc and sew on wrong side.  Face front edges with ribbon, cut through buttonholes and sew around buttonholes.
