Woman's Continental Design Style No. 6026-Spinnerin Volume 150 (1961)

This pattern is based on vintage sizing guidelines, which may differ from modern sizing.  Please look at the Sizing Guide for Spinnerin Vol. 150 for information.



These directions are for size 12.  Changes for sizes 14, 16 and 18 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS

SPINNERIN Nylaine Germantown Knitting Worsted 4-oz. skeins--4(5-5-6)
1 pair each of needles Nos. 5 and 9
6 buttons

GAUGE: 4-1/2 sts=1 inch     6 rows=1 inch

BACK: With No. 5 needles, cast on 0(84-88-92) sts.  Work in stockinette st for 1 inch, end with a K-row.  K next row to form a ridge for hem then change to No. 9 needles and continue in stockinette st until back measures 15(15-16-16) inches from ridge--end with a P-row.  Raglan Shaping: K3, Sl 1, K1, psso, K to last 5 sts, K2 tog, K3.  P next row.  Repeat these 2 rows 28(30-32-34) times more; bind off remaining 22 sts.

RIGHT FRONT: With No. 5 needles, cast on 34(36-38-40) sts.  Work hem as for back then change to No. 9 needles and work until front measures same as back.  Raglan Shaping: K to last 5 sts, K2 tog, K3.  P back.  Repeat these 2 rows until all sts are dec at the same time when armhole measures about 7(7-7-1/2-7-1/2) inches straight up Shape Neck by binding off 2 sts from neck edge then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 times.

LEFT FRONT:  Work same as right front reversing the shaping.

SLEEVES: With No. 5 needles, cast on 36(38-40-42) sts.  Work hem as for back then change to No. 9 needles; work 2 inches then inc 1 st at each side every 6th row 8 times, then every 4th row 6(7-8-9) times; work on the 64(68-72-76) sts until sleeve measures 17(17-18-18) inches from ridge.  Shape raglan as for back at the same time when there are 10 sts left dec 2 sts in center for 4 rows; bind off last 2 sts.

FINISHING:  Sew raglan, sleeve and side seams, sew hems.  Left Front Border: With No. 5 needles and with right side facing you, pick up and K 87(87-91-91) sts along front edge--pick up about 4 sts for every 6 rows.  Work in stockinette st for 3 more rows then work beading as follows: K1, *yo, K2 tog; repeat from * across row.  P back then work in pattern for 2 inches, end at lower edge.
Pattern Stitch a multiple of 4 sts plus 3.
Row 1: *K1, yo, Sl 1; repeat from * across row, end K1.
Row 2: K1, *K2 tog, yo, Sl 1; repeat from *, end K2 tog, K1.
Row 3: K1, *yo, Sl 1, K2 tog; repeat from *, end yo.  Sl 1, K1.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for pattern.  Note: When checking the number of sts the yo and the Sl-st count as 1.  P1 row.
 Work beading as before then work 8 rows of stockinette st; bind off.
Right Front Band: Work same as left band until pattern measures 1 inch ending at lower edge.  Work buttonholes as follows: Work 8(8-12-12) sts, *bind off 4 sts, work 10 sts; repeat from * 4 times more, end bind off 4, work last 5 sts.  Next row cast on 4 over the bound-off sts.  Continue in pattern--be sure to work K1 instead of K2 tog on the cast on stitches in order to have the same number of sts as before.  Complete band to correspond to left band.  Collar: With No. 5 needles, cast on 63(63-67-67) sts; work in pattern for 4 inches--leave sts on needle, break yarn.  Edging: With No. 5 needles, starting at cast-on edge pick up and K 24 sts along short edge, K across the 63 sts on needle, pick up and K 24 sts along other short edge; work beading on next row purling instead of knitting.  Work 8 rows of stockinette st then bind off.  Turn under edging on collar and on fronts and sew on wrong side; sew on collar matching the inside beading on sweater.  Sew a snap or make a tiny loop and sew a button for closing at top edge.  Sew around button holes.  Steam, if necessary.

MATERIALS

SPINNERIN Nylaine Germantown Knitting Worsted 4-oz. skeins--6(6-7-7)
1 pair each of needles Nos. 5 and 8

GAUGE: 5 sts=1 inch     6-1/2 rows=1 inch

PATTERN STITCH Multiple of 5 sts
Row 1: P1, *K1, sl 1 as to P with yarn in back, K1, P2; repeat from * across row, end P1 instead of P2.  Row 2: K1, *P3, K2; repeat from * across row, end K1 instead of K2.  Repeat these 2 rows for pattern.

BACK: With No. 5 needles cast on 100(104-110-114) sts.  Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 2 inches inc 0(1-0-1) st in last row.  Change to No. 8 needles and work in pattern on the 100(105-110-115) sts until back measures 16(16-16 1/2-16 1/2) inches including the ribbing.  Armholes: Bind off 1 st at beg of next 18 rows; wok on the 82(87-92-97) sts until armhole measures straight up 8(8-8 1/2-8 1/2) inches inc 1(0-1-0) st in last row.  Yoke: With No. 5 needles work in ribbing of K1, P1, end K1--reverse for wrong side; when there are 4 rows bind off 2 sts at beg of next 18 rows; 47(51-57-67) sts.  Cast on 2 sts at beg of next 16 rows; work 4 rows on the 79(83-89-93) sts then bind off.

FRONT: Work the same as back.

SLEEVES: With No. 5 needles, cast on 48(48-52-52) sts.  Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 6 inches inc 2(2-3-3) sts in last row--ribbing will be folded in half.  Change to No. 8 needles and work in pattern inc 1 st each side every 6th row 15 times; work on 80(80-85-85) sts until sleeve measures 16-1/2(16 1/2-17-17) inches above ribbing.  Cap: Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 8 rows; 62(62-67-67) sts.  Bind off alternately 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows and 3 sts at beg of following 2 rows 4 times then bind off remaining 22(22-27-27) sts.

FINISHING: Sew yoke seams along shaped edge on wrong side then fold in half and tack down on wrong side.  Sew seams, set in sleeves; fold sleeve cuff in half and tack on wrong side.

Raglan Bulky Style No. 6050-Spinnerin Volume 150 (1961)

MATERIALS

SPINNERIN Nylaine Quick-Knit, 2-oz skeins-13(14-15-15)
1 pair each of needles Nos. 6 and 10-1/2

GAUGE: 3-1/2 sts=1 inch     5 rows=1 inch

PATTERN STITCH a multiple of 2 sts plus 1
Rows 1 and 2: Knit.  Row 3: *K1, P1; repeat from * across row, end K1.  Row 4: *P1, K1; repeat from * across row, end P1.  Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.

BACK: With No. 6 needles cast on 70(74-78-82) sts.  Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 3 inches inc 1 st in last row.  Change to No. 10-1/2 needles and work in pattern until back measures 14(14-15-15) inches including the ribbing--end with Row 4.  Raglan Shaping: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows; starting on next row and repeating every 4th row 5 times more, dec as follows: K1, K2 tog, work to last 3 sts, sl 1, K1, psso, K1; 55(59-63-67) sts.  Dec in same way every other row 18(20-20-22) times; bind off remaining 19(19-23-23) sts.

FRONT: Work same as back and when the 2 sts are bound off for armholes, bind off center 13(13-15-15) sts for Neck.  Working on sts for one side continue to shape raglan to match back keeping neck edge straight; bind off last 3(3-4-4) sts.  Work other side to correspond.

SLEEVES: With No. 6 needles, cast on 40(42-44-46) sts.  Work in ribbing for 3 inches inc 1 st in last row.  Change to No. 10-1/2 needles and work in pattern inc 1 st at each side every 6th row 8(9-10-11) times; work on the 57(61-65-69) sts until sleeve measures 18(18-19-19) inches including the ribbing.  Shape Raglan same as for back; bind off last 5(5-9-9) sts.

FINISHING: Sew raglan, side and sleeve seams.  Collar: With No. 6 needles, cast on 27(27-29-29) sts.  Work in ribbing--every other row starts and ends with K1, every other with P1.  When ribbing measures 3 inches inc 1 st, at edge to be sewn to sweater, every 2 inches 3 times; work on the 30(30-32-32) sts until collar is long enough to reach center back, place a marker then work other half to correspond; bind off in ribbing.  Sew collar to sweater as shown.

Plaid Jacket Style No. 6006-Spinnerin Volume 150 (1961)

MATERIALS

SPINNERIN Nylaine Germantown Knitting Worsted, 4-oz. skeins

Main Color-MC, 2 skeins
Color A, 1 skein
Color B, 1 skein
1 pair of needles No. 8
Steel crochet hook No.1
13 bobbins, 5 buttons
1 yard of 1-1/2 inch grosgrain ribbon

GAUGE: 5 sts=1 inch     7 rows=1 inch

NOTE 1: If necessary, change to larger or smaller needles to obtain the required stitch gauge.

NOTE 2: Wind 4 bobbins of MC, 3 bobbins of Color A, 6 bobbins of Color B.  to avoid holes when changing colors, always pick up new color from underneath the color just used.  Break off and rejoin bobbins when necessary.

PLAID PATTERN
Odd Rows, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17: K 8(10-12) MC, *2B, 4A, 2B, 10 MC; repeat from * once then end with 2B, 4A, 2B, 8(10-12) MC.
Even Rows, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16: P 8(10-12) MC, *2B, 4A, 2B, 10 MC; repeat from * once then end with 2B, 4A, 2B, 8(10-12) MC.
Row 18: With B Purl.  Row 19: With B knit.  Row 20: With B purl.
Rows 21, 23, 25: K 8(10-12) A, *2B, 4A, 2B, 10A: repeat from * once, then end with 2B, 4A, 2B, 8 (10-12) A.
Rows 22 and 24: P 8(10-12) A, *2B, 4A, 2B, 10A; repeat from * once, then end with 2B, 4A, 2B, 8(10-12) A.
Row 26: With B purl.  Row 27: With B knit.  Row 28: With B purl.  Repeat these 28 rows for plaid pattern.

BACK: With No. 8 needles cast on 60(64-68) sts as follows: 8(10-12) MC, *2B, 4A, 2B, 10 MC; repeat from * once then end with 2B, 4A, 2B, 8(10-12) MC.  Work in plaid pattern until back measures 10(11-12) inches from start--a 3/4 inch hem will be turned up later.  Armholes: Bind off 3(4-4) sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 4(4-6) rows.  Work on the 50(52-54) sts until armholes measure 5(5-1/2-6) inches straight up.  Shoulders: Bind off 8 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 8(9-9) sts at beg of next 2 rows; bind off remaining 18(18-20) sts.

NOTE: Make buttonholes for boy on left front, for girl on right front.  Make the front without buttonholes first.

RIGHT FRONT: Cast on 34(36-38) sts as follows; 8(10-12) MC, 2B, 4A, 2B, 10 MC, 2B, 4A, 2B.  Work in plaid pattern having 2 B-sts at front edge and working side edge same as back edge until front measures 10(11-12) inches.  Armhole: Bind off 3 (4-4) sts at side edge then bind off 1 st at same edge every other row 2(2-3) times; 29(30-31) sts.  Neck: Bind off 1 st at front edge every other row 13(13-14) times; work on the 16(17-17) sts until armhole measures same as for back.  Shoulder: Bind off 8 sts from armhole edge once then bind off last 8(9-9) sts.
With pins, mark position of 5 buttons placing the first about 2-1/2 inches from lower edge and the last 1/2 inch below start of neck.

LEFT FRONT: Cast on 34(36-38) sts as follows: 2B, 4A, 2B, 10 MC, 2B, 4A, 2B, 8(10-12) MC.  Work to correspond to right front making buttonholes opposite markers as follows: Starting at front edge, work 3 sts, bind off 2 sts, work to end of row.  Next row, cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts.

SLEEVES: With MC, cast on 34(34-36) sts; work in stockinette-st for 6 rows.  P next row to make a ridge for hemline.  Continue in stockinette-st inc 1 st at each side every 6th row 7(8-9) times; work on the 48(50-54) sts until sleeve measures 10-1/2(11-12) inches from ridge.  Cap: Bind off 3(3-4) sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 20(22-24) rows; 22 sts.  Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 6 rows then bind off remaining 10 sts.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams; set in sleeves.  Turn up 3/4 inch hem on sweater and sew; turn up and sew sleeve hem.  With matching colors work 2 rows of sc around neck edge; turn sc and sew on wrong side.  Face front edges with ribbon, cut through buttonholes and sew around buttonholes.

Shawl Collar Cardigan Style No. 6076-Spinnerin Volume 150 (1961)

GAUGE: 3 sts=1 inch     4-1/2 rows=1 inch

NOTE: If necessary, change to larger or smaller needles to obtain the required stitch gauge.

PATTERN STITCH a multiple of 4 sts plus 2
Row 1: *P2, K2; repeat from * across row, end P2.  Row 2: *K2, P2; repeat from *, end K2.  Row 3: *P2, K2 sts tog: repeat from *, end P2.  Row 4: *K2, K in front then in back of next st; repeat from *, end K2.  Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.

BACK: With No. 7 needles cast on 50(54-58) sts.  Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1-1/2 inches.  Change to No. 10-1/2 needles and work in pattern until back measures 16(16-17) inches including the ribbing.  Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 4 rows; work on the 40(44-48) sts until armholes measure 7-1/2(7-1/2-8) inches straight up.  Shoulders: Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows; bind off remaining 16(16-18) sts.

LEFT FRONT: With No. 7 needles, cast on 32(32-36) sts.  Work in ribbing for 1-1/2 inches, keeping 6 sts at front edge in garter-st.  Change to No. 10-1/2 needles and work in pattern keeping the 6 garter-sts for front border.  Work until front measures 15(15-16) inches from start.  Neck and Armhole Shaping: Bind off 6 sts at front edge then, discontinuing front border, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 9(7-10) times at the same time when front measures 16(16-17) inches bind off 3 sts at armhole edge then bind off 1 st at same edge twice; work on the 12(14-15) sts until armhole measures same as for back.  Shoulder: Bind off 6 sts from armhole edge then bind off last 6(8-9) sts.  With pins, mark position of 5 buttons placing the first about 3/4 inches from lower edge and the last close to neck shaping at top.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front making buttonholes opposite markers as follows: Starting at front edge, K2 sts, bind off 2 sts, work to end of row.  Next row, cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts.

SLEEVES: With No. 7 needles, cast on 30(30-34) sts and work in ribbing for 2 inches.  Change to No 10-1/2 needles and work in pattern inc 1 st at each side every 8th row 6(7-6) times; work on the 42(44-46) sts until sleeve measures 14(14-15) inches including the ribbing.  Cap: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 16(18-20) rows; 20 sts.  Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows then bind off remaining 12 sts.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams; set in sleeves.  Collar: With right side of work toward you and using No. 7 needles, pick up and K about 115(119-123) sts around neck edge starting and ending inside the bound-off sts for front border.  Work in ribbing for 3/4 inches.  Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 30 rows then bind off remaining 55(59-63) sts in ribbing.  Sew front edges of collar to front border.  Work 1 row of sc along collar and front edges.  Sew around each buttonhole.

GAUGE: 3 sts=1 inch     4-1/2 rows=1 inch

NOTE: If necessary, change to larger or smaller needles to obtain the required stitch gauge.

PATTERN STITCH a multiple of 4 sts plus 2
Row 1: *P2, K2; repeat from * across row, end P2.  Row 2: *K2, P2; repeat from *, end K2.  Row 3: *P2, K2 sts tog: repeat from *, end P2.  Row 4: *K2, K in front then in back of next st; repeat from *, end K2.  Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.

BACK: With No. 7 needles cast on 50(54-58) sts.  Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1-1/2 inches.  Change to No. 10-1/2 needles and work in pattern until back measures 16(16-17) inches including the ribbing.  Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 4 rows; work on the 40(44-48) sts until armholes measure 7-1/2(7-1/2-8) inches straight up.  Shoulders: Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows; bind off remaining 16(16-18) sts.

FRONT: Work same as back until 15(15-16) inches from start.  Neck and Armhole Shaping: Work across 22(24-26) sts, bind off center 6 sts; working on sts for one side, dec 1 st at neck edge every 4th row 5(5-6) times at the same time when front measures 16(16-17) inches, bind off 3 sts at armhole edge then bind off 1 st at same edge twice.  Work on the 12(14-15) sts until armhole measures same as for back.  Shoulder: Bind off 6 sts from armhole edge once then bind off last 6(8-9) sts.  Work other side to correspond.

SLEEVES: With No. 7 needles, cast on 30(30-34) sts and work in ribbing for 2 inches.  Change to No 10-1/2 needles and work in pattern inc 1 st at each side every 8th row 6(7-6) times; work on the 42(44-46) sts until sleeve measures 14(14-15) inches including the ribbing.  Cap: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 16(18-20) rows; 20 sts.  Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows then bind off remaining 12 sts.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams; set in sleeves.  Collar: With right side of work toward you and using No. 7 needles, pick up and K 40(42-44) sts at right side of neck; with 2nd needle pick up and K 20(22-24) sts across back; with a 3rd needle pick up and K 40(42-44) sts at other side of neck.  Work back and forth in ribbing on the 100(104-110) sts for 2 inches, then bind off 2 sts at beg of next 24 rows; bind off remaining 52(56-62) sts in ribbing.  Work 1 row of sc along edge of collar; sew front edges of collar to bound off edge of sweater.

MATERIALS

Main Color, MC-11(12) skeins

Main Color, MC-21(22) balls

For Plaid Pattern: SPINNERIN Mohair 1001
Color A-6 balls
Color B-5 balls
Color C-5 balls
1 pair each of needles Nos. 9 and 10
Plastic or aluminum crochet hook size I
3 large buttons
1/2 yard of 2-inch grosgrain ribbon
1/4 yard of nylon tulle

GAUGE: 3-1/2 sts=1 inch     5 rows=1 inch

NOTE: If necessary, change to larger or smaller needles to obtain the required stitch gauge.

NOTE 2: The vertical color stripes of the plaid are crocheted in afterwards with a slip-st using the P-st lines as guide.

PLAID PATTERN:
Wrong Side Row: P 4(6), *K1, P2, K1, P2, K1, P8; repeat from * across row, end P 4(6) instead of P8.
Right Side Row: K 4(6), *P1, K2, P1, K2, P1, K8; repeat from * across row, end K 4(6) instead of K8.  Repeat these 2 rows throughout using the colors below:
With MC, work 4 rows
*With Color C, work 2 rows
With Color A, work 3 rows
With MC, work 3 rows
With Color B, work 2 rows
With MC, work 11 rows
Repeat from last *--21 rows--for plaid pattern.

BACK: With MC and No. 10 needles cast on 75(79) sts.  Starting with a wrong side row, work plaid pattern dec 1 st at each side at 11, 15 and 19 inches; work on the 69(73) sts until back measures 21 inches from start.  Armholes: Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 10 rows; work on the 49(53) sts until armholes measure 9-1/2 inches straight up.  Shoulders and Neck: Bind off 5(6) sts at armhole edge every other row twice more at the same time bind off 4 sts at neck edge once--all sts bound off.  Work other side to correspond.

POCKET LININGS: With MC and No. 10 needles, cast on 25 sts; work in stockinette-st for 5 inches then work 3 rows of color A; slip sts on a holder or extra needle.

LEFT FRONT: With MC and No. 10 needles cast on 62(64) sts.  Work in plaid pattern having 6 sts of stockinette at front edge for both sizes.  When front measures 10 inches ending with 2 rows of color A work Pocket as follows: Starting at front edge, work 33 sts, bind off 25 sts for pocket opening, work last 4(6) sts.  Next row, insert pocket lining to take the place of the bound-off sts.  Continue to work as before dec 1 st at side edge at 11, 15 and 19 inches; work on the 59(61) sts until front measures 21 inches.  Armhole: Bind off 7 sts at side edge then bind off 1 st at same edge every other row 6 times; work on the 46(48) sts until armhole measures 5 inches.  Neck and Shoulder: Bind off 20(21) sts at front edge then dec 1 st at neck edge every row 5 times then every other row 6 times at the same time when armhole measures same as for back, bind off 5(6) sts from armhole edge once then bind off 5 sts twice.

RIGHT FRONT:  Work to correspond to left front making 2 buttonholes as follows placing them as shown: Starting at front edge, work 1 st, bind off 5 sts, work 8 sts, bind off 5 sts, work to end of row.  Next row, cast on 5 sts over the bound-off sts.

SLEEVES: With MC and No. 10 needles, cast on 45(49) sts.  Work in plaid pattern inc 1 st at each side every 2 inches 5 (4) times--keep the inc sts in stockinette-st.  Work on the 55(57) sts until sleeve measures about 16 inches ending the same as for sweater.  Cap: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 36 rows; 15(17) sts.  Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows; bind off remaining 5(7) sts.

COLLAR: With Color C and No. 10 needles, cast on 91 sts.  Work in plaid pattern starting as follows: With Color C, *P1, K2, P1, K8, P1, K2; repeat from * across row, end P1--this counts as 2nd row of Color C.  Continue to work in established pattern dec 6 sts evenly spaced on 3rd row of Color A and 6 more sts on 2nd row of Color B at the same time work a buttonhole 5 sts from edge on 2nd row of MC.  Change to No. 9 needles after 2nd row of Color B then work 4 rows of MC; bind off firmly.  Make another piece the same for underpart.

FINISHING: Using a slip-st, crochet along the vertical P-st lines with the following colors starting at right side of back: Color B, C and A.  Repeat this order throughout--do not reverse for front.  Turn in front facing along the 2nd P-st line--along Color C stripe--use nylon tulle as interfacing.  Hems: With MC and No. 9 needles, holding wrong side of work toward you, pick up and K 73(77) sts on back.  work in stockinette-st for 1-1/2 inches then bind off.  Work the same for sleeve edge picking up 41(45) sts and for front edge picking up 42(44) sts to facing.  Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams; set in sleeves.  Face underpart of collar with tulle then join the 2 sections around neck and front edges sewing with an overcast-st on wrong side.  Turn to right side and sew to neck edge holding in edge of coat when necessary to match vertical lines of plaid pattern.  Face pocket edge with ribbon; sew lining in place.  Sew or crochet around buttonholes.

MATERIALS

SPINNERIN Nylaine Germantown Knitting Worsted, 4-oz skeins-5(6-6)
1 pair each of needles Nos. 5 and 8
1 dpn for cable

GAUGE: 5 sts=1 inch     7 rows=1 inch

NOTE:  If necessary, change to larger or smaller needles to obtain required stitch gauge.

PATTERN A a multiple of 2 sts plus 1
Row 1: *P1, K next st in back thus twisting it; repeat from * across row, end P1.  Row 2: *K1, P1; repeat from *, end K1.  Repeat these 2 rows for pattern A.

PATTERN B a multiple of 2 sts plus 1
Row 1: *P1, K next st in back; repeat from * across row, end P1.  Row 2: Purl.  Repeat these 2 rows for pattern B.

CABLE PATTERN worked on 12 sts
Row 1: P2, K8, P2.  Row 2 and all even Rows through Row 12: K2, Sl next 2 sts to dpn and hold in front of work, K2 sts, then K the 2 sts from dpn, sl next 2 sts to dpn and hold in back of work, K2 sts, then K the 2 sts from dpn.  P2.  Rows 5 and 7:  P2, K8, P2.  Row 9:  P2, Sl next 2 sts to dpn and hold in back of work, K2 sts, then K the 2 sts from dpn, Sl next 2 sts to dpn and hold in front of work, K2 sts then K the 2 sts from dpn, P2.  Row 11:  P2, K8, P2.  Repeat these 12 rows for cable pattern.

BACK: With No. 5 needles cast on 107(111-115) sts.  Work in pattern A for 2 inches.  Change to No. 8 needles and work in pattern B until back measures 12(13-14) inches from start.  Armholes:  Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 4 rows.  Next row, start cable pattern as follows: Work 4 sts in pattern B then work cable pattern inc 1 st in the K-8 panel, work in established pattern B to last 15 sts, work cable pattern inc 1 st, work last 4 sts in pattern B.  Continue on the 93(97-101) sts working cable pattern at each side until cable bands measure 5-1/2(6-6-1/2) inches.  Neck:  Work across 41(43-45) sts, bind off center 11 sts; working on remaining 41(43-45) sts dec 1 st at neck edge every row 12 times; work on the 29(31-33) sts until cable band measures 9(9-1/2-10) inches.  Shoulders: Bind off 6 sts from armhole edge every other row 4 times, then bind off last 5(7-9) sts.  Work other side to correspond.

FRONT: Work same as back starting neck when cable bands measure 4(4-1/2-5) inches.

SLEEVES: With No. 5 needles, cast on 49(51-53) sts.  Work in pattern A for 3 inches.  Change to No. 8 needles and work in pattern B inc 1 st at each side every 4th row 8 times then every 6th row 8(9-10) times; work on the 81(85-89) sts until sleeve measures 20(20-21) inches from start.  Cap: Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 4 rows then 4 sts at beg of next 4 rows then 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows; bind off remaining 33(37-41) sts.

FINISHING: Yoke: With No. 8 needles, cast on 16 sts.  Work cable pattern keeping 2 garter-sts at each end.  When strip is long enough to fit around neck--back and front--bind off.  Sew yoke to sweater using an  overcast-st.  Neck: With No. 5 needles, pick up and K about 129 sts around neck edge.  Work in Pattern A for 4 inches then bind off loosely.  Sew shoulder and neck seam, turn in collar and sew to wrong side.  Set in sleeves fitting bound-off edges of armhole to top of sleeve below cap.  Sew side and sleeve seams.

Sport Jacket Style No. 6063-Spinnerin Volume 150 (1961)

MATERIALS

SPINNERIN Mohair 1001, 1-oz balls-10(11-12)
1 pair each of needles Nos. 7 and 11
6 buttons

GAUGE: 3 sts=1 inch     4-1/2 rows=1 inch

PATTERN STITCH on an even number of sts
Row 1: K1, *K the 2nd st on needle through back of st, K the first st through front, slip both sts off needle; repeat from * across row, end K1.  Rows 2 and 4: Purl.  Row 3: K2, *cross next 2 sts as in Row 1; repeat from * across row, end K2.  Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.

BACK: With No. 7 needles cast on 52(56-60) sts.  Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 3 inches.  Change to No. 11 needles and work in pattern until back measures 12(12-1/2-13) inches including the ribbing.  Armholes: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at tbeg of next 4 rows.  Work on the 44(48-52) sts until armholes measure straight up 8(8-1/2-9) inches.  Shoulders: Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 4 rows then bind off 3(5-7) sts ab beg of next 2 rows.  Slip remaining 14 sts on a holder.

LEFT FRONT: With No. 7  needles cast on 33(35-37) sts; work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 3 inches--every other row starts and ends with K1, every other with P1.  Place 7 sts for front band on a holder.  Change to No. 11 needles and work in pattern on the 26(28-30) sts until front measures 12(12-1/2-13) inches.  Armhole: Bind off 2 sts at armhole edge then dec 1 st at same edge twice; work on the 22(24-26) sts until armhole measures 6(6-1/2-7) inches.  Neck: Bind off 2 sts at neck edge then dec 1 st at same edge every row 5 times at the same time when armhole measures same as back bind off to shape shoulders, 6 sts twice and 3(5-7) sts once to match back.  Front Band: With No. 7 needles, work in ribbing on the 7 sts until band measures slightly stretched same as front to start of neck shaping--slip sts on a holder, break yarn.  Mark position of 6 buttons placing the first in center of ribbing and the last close to top edge.

RIGHT FRONT:  Work same as left front reversing the shaping and making buttonholes opposite markers as follows: Work 3 sts, bind off 1 st, work to end of row.  Next row cast on 1 st over bound-off st.  Do not break yarn after completing front band.
Steam each piece.  Do not press.  Sew shoulder seams.

COLLAR:  With No. 7 needles starting at right front, rib 7 sts for band.  Work in ribbing on the 49 sts until collar measures 3-1/2 inches front start; bind off loosely in ribbing.

SLEEVES: With No. 7 needles, cast on 32(34-36) sts.  Work in ribbing for 2 inches.  Change to No 11 needles and work in pattern inc 1 st at each side every 2 inches 4 times.  Work on the 40(42-44)  sts until sleeve measures 12-1/2(13-13-1/2) inches including the ribbing.  Cap: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 14(16-18) rows; bind off 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows; bind off remaining 10 sts.

FINISHING: Sew front bands to sweater matching buttonholes to markers.  Sew.


This is exactly how the pattern ends in the booklet.  I would assume it is to be assembled as any standard sweater pattern would be.

Italian Slipon Style No. 6019-Spinnerin Volume 150 (1961)

MATERIALS

SPINNERIN Mohair 1001, 1-oz balls-10(11-12)
1 pair each of needles Nos. 6 and 10-1/2
Steel crochet hook No. 2
7 buttons

GAUGE: 3 sts=1 inch     4-1/2 rows=1 inch

NOTE: If necessary, change to larger or smaller needles to obtain the required stitch gauge.

BACK: With No. 10 needles cast on 59(63-67) sts.  Work in ribbing of K1, P1 throughout--every other row starts and ends with K1, every other with P1.  When back measures 4-1/2 inches, bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows then continue to work on the 51(55-59) sts until back measures 14(14-15) inches from start.  Raglan Shaping: Bind off 2(3-4) sts at beg of next 2 rows then dec 1 st at each side every 3rd row 15(16-17) times; bind off remaining 17 sts.

FRONT: With No. 10-1/2 needles cast on 51(55-59) sts; work in ribbing as for back making a buttonhole at each side 1 inch from start as follows: Work 2 sts, yo, work 2 tog, work to last 4 sts, work 2 tog, yo, work 2 sts.  Work 2-1/2 inches then repeat buttonholes.  Work until front measures 6(6-7) inches from start.  Front Opening: With right side of work toward you, work 23(25-27) sts, slip remaining 28(30-32) sts on a holder or a thread to be worked later for right front.  Cast on 5 sts at center edge for underlap.  work on the 28(30-32) sts until front measures 14(14-15) inches.  Raglan and Neck Shaping: Bind off 2(3-4) sts at side edge then dec 1 st at same edge every 3rd row 15(16-17) times at the same time shape neck by working the 6th and 7th sts from center edge tog; repeat every 6th row 5 times more; work on remaining 5 sts for 4 inches--the strip should reach center back; bind off.  Work other side to correspond omitting the cast-on sts and making 3 buttonholes as before at front edge placing the first 1-1/4 inch above start of opening and the last 1/2 inch below neck shaping.

SLEEVES: With No. 6 needles, cast on 25(27-29) sts and work in ribbing for 2 inches.  Change to No 10-1/2 needles and work in ribbing inc 1 st at each side every 9th row 7 times; work on the 39(41-43)  sts until sleeve measures 16(16-17) inches from start.  Raglan Shaping: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows then dec 1 st at each side every 3rd row 15(16-17) times; bind off remaining 5 sts.

FINISHING: Sew raglan and sleeve seams.  Sew side seams to underlap.  Sew underlap in place.  Sew front underlap to sweater, sew strips to back joining them at center.  Work 1 row of sc along neck and front edges.  Face side slits and front edges to neck shaping with ribbon; cut through and sew around buttonholes using silk or buttonhole twist.

PATTERN STITCH a multiple of 3 sts plus 1
Row 1: *P1, K2; repeat across row, end P1.  Row 2: Purl.  Repeat these 2 rows for pattern.

BACK: With No. 7 needles, cast on 52(54-58) sts.  Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1-1/2 inches (for size 14 only, inc 1 st in last row). Change to No. 10-1/2 needle and work in pattern until back measures 15(15-16) inches including the ribbing.  Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows then dec 1 st at beg of next 2 rows; work on the 44(47-50) sts until armholes measure 8(8-1/2-9) inches straight up.  Shoulders: Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 6(7-8) sts at beg of next 2 rows; slip remaining 20(21-22) sts on a holder.

FRONT: Work same as back until armhole shaping is completed; 44(47-50) sts.  Next row, work across 22(23-25) sts (for size 14 only, bind off center st).  Working on sts for one side, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 times then every 4th row 6(6-7) times more at the same time when armhole measures 8(8-1/2-9) inches bind off for shoulders to match back.  Work other side to correspond.

GAUGE: 3-1/2 sts=1 inch     5 rows=1 inch

NOTE: If necessary, change to larger or smaller needles to obtain the required stitch gauge.

BACK: With No. 10 needles, cast on 57(61-65) sts.  Work in stockinette-st inc 1 st at each side every 4th row 3 times; work on the 63(67-71) sts until back measures 14(14-15) inches.  Raglan Shaping: Bind off 1 st at beg of next 46(50-57) rows; work 4 rows on the 17 sts then bind off.

POCKET LININGS: With No. 10 needles, cast on 14 sts; work in stockinette-st for 3-1/2 inches.  Slip on holder.

LEFT FRONT: With No. 10 needles, cast on 32(34-36) sts.  Inc 1 st at side edge every 4th row 3 times; work on the 35(37-39) sts until fron measures 4 inches, end at side edge.  Pocket: K 7(9-11) sts, bind off next 14 sts, work to end of row.  Next row, insert pocket lining, with right side toward sweater, to take the place of the bound-off sts.  Work until front measures 14(14-15) inches.  Raglan Shaping and Neck: Bind off 1 st at side edge every other row 23(25-27) times, end with 4 rows straight at the same time when there are 24 sts bind off 5 sts at front edge then bind off 1 st at neck edge every other row 5 times; bind off last 2 sts.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front.

SLEEVES: With No. 10 needles, cast on 33(35-37) sts.  Work 4 rows of stockinette-st then P next row to make a ridge for hemline.  Continue in stockinette-st inc 1 st at each side every 6th row 10(11-12) times; work on the 53(57-61) sts until sleeve measures 14(14-1/2-15) inches from ridge.  Raglan Shaping: Bind off 1 st at beg of next 46(50-51) rows; work 4 rows on the 7 sts then bind off.

HOOD: With No. 10 needles, cast on 56 sts; work in stockinette-st for 8-1/2 inches.  Bind off 19 sts at beg of next 2 rows; work on remaining 18 sts until center section measures same as bound-off edges, bind off.

EDGING: Use Nylaine Knitting Worsted and No. 4 needles--For back, cast on 141(145-149) sts; work in ribbing of K1, P1 inc 1 st at each end every row 6 times; work on the 153(157-161) sts until band measures 2 inches, bind off in ribbing.  For lower edge of each front, cast on 71(73-75) sts; work in ribbing inc 1 st at one side only every row 6 times; complete as for back.  For each front edge, cast on 128(130-134) sts; work in ribbing for 2 inches.  For each pocket, cast on 26 sts; work in ribging for 2 inches.  For hood, cast on 153 sts; work in ribbing for 2 inches.

NOTE: If hood is not desired work neckband, cast on 26 sts; work in ribbing for 2 inches.

FINISHING: Sew raglan and sleeve seams; sew side seams leaving shaped edges open at bottom.  Turn up and sew sleeve hems; sew pocket linings.  Sew on edgings starting with lower edges having tapered points at side seams.  Fold to wrong side, giving effect of piping.  Tack in place.  If hood is not desired, sew on neck edging then front edgings.  If hood is desired, sew hood to sweater then sew on edgings for front and hood.  Sew snap fasteners just inside front edgings.

GAUGE: 3 sts=1 inch     5 rows=1 inch

NOTE: If necessary, change to larger or smaller needles to obtain the required stitch gauge.

PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 2 sts plus 1
Row 1: Wrong side, K1, *yo, sl 1 as to purl, K1; repeat from * across row.  Row 2: *K1, K2tog through back-the yo and the sl-st; repeat from * across row, end K1.  Repeat these two rows for pattern.

BACK: With No. 7 needles, cast on 42(44-46) sts.  Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 2 inches inc 1 st in the last row.  Change to No 10-1/2 needles and work in pattern inc 1 st at each side every 1-1/2 inches 4 times; work on the 51(53-55) sts until back measures 11(11-12) inches including the ribbing.  Armholes and Neck: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows then dec 1 st at each side every other row 8 times; 31(33-35) sts.  Bind off center 11(13-15) sts for neck and working on the 10 sts for left side continue to dec 1 at armhole edge every other row 4 times more at the same time dec 1 st at neck edge every row 6 times-all sts dec.  Work right side to correspond.

FRONT: Work ribbing as for back.  Change to No. 10-1/2 needles and work in pattern inc 1 st at each side every inch 6 times; work on the 55(57-59) sts until front measures 11(11-12) inches.  Armhole and Neck: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows then dec 1 st at each side every other row 4 times; bind off center 9(11-13) sts for neck and working on the 17 sts for right side, continue to dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row 8 times more at the same time dec 1 st at neck edge every row 3 times then every other row 6 times.  Work left side to correspond.

SLEEVES: With No. 7 needles, cast on 22(24-16) sts.  Work in ribbing for 1 inch inc 1 st in last row.  Change to No. 10-1/2 needles and work in pattern increasing 1 st at each side every inch 8 times; work on the 39(41-43)  sts until sleeve measures 12(12-13) inches including the ribbing.  Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows then dec 1 st at each side every other row 10 times; 15(17-19) sts.  Bind off 8 sts at front edge once then bind off last 7(9-11) sts from same edge.  Make other sleeve the same reversing shaping for top thus having one right and one left sleeve.

FINISHING: Sew in sleeves, sew side and sleeve seams.  Sew 2 rows of velvet tubing around neck to form scallops, make a small bow and attach at front.

FOR SLEEVE AS SHOWN: When back measures 12(12-12-1/2) ins cast on 6 sts at each end.  Work even on 62(66-70) sts for 7(7-7-1/2) ins.  Bind off 12(12-13) sts at beg of 2 rows then shape shoulders as described below.  Fronts: When piece measures 12(12-12-1/2) cast on 6 sts at seam edge.  Work even on 21(23-24) sts until same as Back.  At sleeve edge bind off 13(13-14) sts, then 4(4-5) sts twice.

BACK: With No. 6 needles, cast on 40(44-48) sts.  Work in ribbing of K2, P2 for 6 rows.  Change to No. 10-1/2 needles and work in stockinette-st for 3 inches then inc 1 st at each side every 4th row 5 times; work on the 50(54-58) sts until back measures 12(12-12-1/2) inches including the ribbing.  Armholes: Bind off 3(3-4) sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 6 rows; work on 38(42-44) sts until armholes measure 7-1/2(7-1/2-8) inches straight up.  Shoulders: Bind off 4(5-5) sts at beg of next 4 rows; slip 22(22-24) sts on a holders.

LEFT FRONT: With No. 6 needles, cast on 24(24-28) sts.  Work in ribbing for 6 rows inc 1(3-1) sts in last row.  Change to No. 10-1/2 needles and work in stockinette-st on 25(27-29) sts for 3 inches then inc 1 st at armhole edge every 4th row 5 times at the same time when front measures 7(7-7-1/2) inches including the ribbing.  Shape Neck as follows: Slip 12 sts at front edge on a holder then dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 3(3-4) times; work on the 15(17-18) sts until front measures 12(12-12-1/2) inches.  Armhole: Bind off 3(3-4) sts at side edge then bind off 1 st at same edge every other row 4 times; work on the 8(10-10) sts until armhole measures same as for back.  Shoulder: Bind off 4(5-5) sts from armhole edge twice.
With pins, mark position of 2 sets of buttons placing the first about 1/2 inch from lower edge-3rd in neckband.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front making buttonholes opposite markers as follows: Starting at front edge, work 1, yo, K2tog, work 4 sts, K2tog, yo, work to end of row.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder and side seams.  Neckband: With No. 6 needles and right side facing you, pick up and K 146(150-154) sts around neck including sts on holders.  Work in ribbing for 6 rows-every other row starts and ends with K2, every other with P2; make a set of buttonholes as before in 4th row.  Bind off in ribbing.  Work 1 row of sc around armholes.  Face front edges with a double row of ribbon to cover both sets of buttonholes; cut through and sew around buttonholes.

Mohair Shrug Style No. 6020 -Spinnerin Volume 150 (1961)

This pattern is based on vintage sizing guidelines, which may differ from modern sizing.  Please look at the Sizing Guide for Spinnerin Vol. 150 for information. 


These directions are for size 12.  Changes for sizes 14 and 16 are in parentheses.

MATERIALS

SPINNERIN Mohair 1001, 1-oz balls-6(7-7)
1 pair each of needles Nos. 6 and 10-1/2
5 buttons
1 yard of 1-1/2 inch grosgrain ribbon

GAUGE: 3 sts=1 inch     4-1/2 rows=1 inch

NOTE: If necessary, change to larger or smaller needles to obtain the required stitch gauge.

BACK: With No. 6 needles, cast on 38(42-46) sts.  Work in ribbing of P2, K2 for 6 rows-every other row starts and ends with P2, every other with K2.  Change to No. 10-1/2 needles and work in stockinette-st inc 1 st at each side every 4th row 6 times; work on the 50(54-58) sts until back measures 7(7-7-1/2) inches including the ribbing.  Armholes: Bind off 3(3-4) sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 6 rows; work on the 38(42-44) sts until armholes measure 7-1/2(7-1/2-8) inches straight up.  Shoulders: Bind off 6(6-7) sts at beg of next 4 rows then slip remaining 14(14-16) sts on a holder.

LEFT FRONT: With No. 10-1/2 needles, cast on 5 sts: work in stockinette-st casting on 3 sts at front edge every other row 3 times then 2 sts every other row 3(4-5) times at the same time inc 1 st at side edge every 4th row 6 times; work on the 26(28-30) sts until front measures 6(6-6-1/2) inches from start.  Armhole: Bind off 3(3-4) sts at side edge then bind off 1 st at the same edge every other row 4 times; work on the 19(20-21) sts until armhole measures 5-1/2(5-1/2-6) inches.  Neck: Slip 4 sts at neck edge on a holder then dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 3(3-4) times; work on the 12 (14-14) sts until armhole measures same as for back.  Shoulder: Bind off 6(6-7) sts from armhole edge twice.  Work right front to correspond.

SLEEVES: With No. 6 needles, cast on 32(32-36) sts.  Work in ribbing for 6 rows.  Change to No. 10-1/2 needles and work in stockinette-st inc 1 st at each side every 4th row 3(4-3) times; work on the 38(40-42) sts until sleeve measures 5(5-5-1/2) inches including the ribbing.

CAP:  Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off 1 st at beg of next 18(20-22) rows; 14 sts.  Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows then bind off remaining 10 sts.

FINISHING: Sew shoulder seams.  Neckband: With No. 6 needles and right side facing you, pick up and K 54(54-58) sts around neck; work in ribbing as on back for 6 rows; bind off in ribbing.  Left Front Border: With No. 6 needles starting at neck edge, pick up and K 76(80-84) sts along front and lower edge; work in ribbing-matching it to back-for 6 rows, bind off in ribbing.  With pins, mark position of 5 buttons placing the first close to the lower edge and the last close to the top edge.  Right Front Border: Work to correspond to left border making buttonholes opposite markers on 4th row of ribbing by binding off 2 sts.  Next row, cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts.  Sew side and sleeve seams and set in sleeves.  Face straight front edges with ribbon; cut through and sew around buttonholes with silk or buttonhole twist.

Poncho with Hood Style No. 6058 -Spinnerin Volume 150 (1961)

MATERIALS
SPINNERIN Nylaine Germantown Knitting Worsted 4-oz. skeins 3(3-4)
1 pair each of needles Nos. 4 and 8
5 buttons

GAUGE: 5 sts=1 inch     7 rows=1 inch

SEED-STITCH PATTERN on an uneven number of sts P1, K1 across row, end P1.  Work all rows in this way always having a P-st over a K-st and a K-st over a P-st.

Back:  With No. 4 needles, cast on 75(77-79) sts.  Work in garter-st for 7 rows.  Change to No. 8 needles and work in Seed-Stitch Pattern keeping 3 garter-sts at each edge until back measures 19(20-21) inches from start.  Shoulders: Bind of 8 sts at beg of next 4 rows then bind off 9(10-10) sts at beg of next 2 rows, slip remaining 25(25-27) sts on a holder.

FRONT: Work same as back until 13(14-15) inches from start.  Divide for Neck Opening as follows: Work across 34(35-36) sts, K center 7 sts, work across 34(35-36) sts; repeat this row 5 more times then divide sts in half working 2 sts tog at center.  Work on 37(38-39) sts for one side keeping 3 garter-sts at each end until front measures 17(18-19) inches.  Neck: Slip 7 sts at neck edge on a holder then dec 1 st at same edge every row 5(5-6) times: work on remaining 25(26-26) sts until front measures same as back.  Shoulder: Bind off 8 sts every other row twice then bind off last 9(10-10) sts.  Work other side to correspond.

FINISHING: With No. 4 needles and right side facing you, pick up and K 79(79-81) sts around neck edge.  Work in ribbing of K1, P1 for 1 inch-every other row starts and ends with K1, every other with P1.  If Hood is not desired, bind off in ribbing.  Hood: Bind off 5(5-6) sts at beg of next 2 rows; 69 sts.  Cast on 7 sts at beg of next row, K3 sts work in pattern across row, inc 10 sts evenly spaced, cast on 7 sts at other end.  Keeping 3 garter-sts at each end, work on the 93 sts until hood measures 7-1/2 inches.  Next row K4 and slip on a holder, bind off 26 sts, work to end of row.  Next row bind off 30 sts; work on center 33 sts until section measures same as bound off edges; bind off.  Work in garter-st on the 4 sts on holder until it measures same as center section.  Sew bound off edges to center section reversing seam at front as 7 sts will be turned back for cuff.  Sew border to front joining it to other side.  Turn back cuff and work 1 ros of sc along folded edge.  Sew or crochet a button loop at edge of neck ribbing; make 2 loops at each side of body placing the first at bottom edge and the 2nd at waist.

NOTE: If a simple bonnet is desired, cast on 93 sts.  Rib in K1 and P1 for 1-1/2 inches, then follow directions above, beginning at end of first line in column 2, above-keeping 3 garter sts etc.
